Record prices for automobilia

Got one of these toy pedal cars rusting somewhere?
Work in some elbow grease, and you’re looking at R20 000.

EUROPE’S austerity measures clearly have no impact in Buxton, England.
At an H&H auction last week, a 42-year-old car sold for £242 000 (R2,923 million).
Other automobilia also fetched record prices.
A registration plate — 512 M — which clearly begged to be affixed to the 1995 Ferrari F12M, was bought by a nameless buyer at close to £20 900 (R252 480).
The star item at the auction was a fully restored Austin J40 pedal car, which went for just over R20 000.
The fascinating collection of Mercedes-Benz memorabilia, that included a large bronze medallion, celebrating 60 years of racing collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Daimler between 1894 and 1954, also sold for about R13 000 plus.
The Aston Martin that fetched the record price was one of the 248 Mark II DB6, made between 1969 and 1970. It differed from the DB6 in the slightly flaired wheel arches, which were widened to fit the wider wire wheels — which still could not fix this old bird’s abysmal handling.
As an owner states on a forum site: “Brakes and suspension do not compare with modern cars, so don’t try any fancy stuff.”
The brakes in the record-priced Aston Martin had been improved, and with a new 4,2-litre engine and four-speed automatic transmission were fitted. — WR.
