Turning you straight on cats

Q: Can I take out the catalytic converter on my exhaust without causing damage to my car?
A: Yes, you can, but you shouldn’t — if only to keep off your back all those very special people who hug trees when not stroking little bunnies.
In South Africa, keeping a pricey catalytic converter on your car also gives thousands of platinum miners jobs. That is until researchers develop a synthetic mineral alternative to platinum.
If, however, you don’t care for the little bunnies and/or reckon that you also have a right to belch carcinogenic toxins from diesel exhaust fumes into our air, as does every old truck on our roads, the Internet has lots of advice on either fitting a non-catalytic exhaust or replacing the cat with a pipe.
