RMI's last try in SA's tyre recycling battle

Tuning you straight: The tyre recycling battle
THE latest salvo in the tyre industry’s battle to recycle SA’s old tyres in “a cost-effective, sustainable and transparant manner” saw the integrated tyre industry forum (ITIF) meet with the South African National Civic Organisation to discuss recycling tyres through its 6,1 million members. ITIF chair, Vishall Premlall, said the “flawed plan” that government had approved, withdrawn and approved again, would each year charge tyre users some R624 million in levies, before VAT. Premlall said the Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of SA own statistics show it would fail to collect some 420 000 tons of tyres before the fourth year of its five year plan. The Witness is still waiting on Redisa to tell us how it will recycle tyres. As it stands, it looks like we will pay millions to move tyres from one pile to another.
