A PLUCKY little 0,9-litre Fiat Panda, which broke the outright world record for driving non-stop from Cape Town to London in 10 days, 13 hours and 28 minutes, will next go on museum tours to promote Fiat in the UK.
Philip Young and co-driver Paul Brace, drove the 16 000 km journey in a Panda to Fiat UK.
To complete the trip in their target of under 11 days, Young and Brace had to cover an average 1454 km a day, belting along at an average of 64 km/h.
The 0,9-litre, TwinAir hatchback they used was showroom specification had an extra fuel tank, sump guards, stronger springs and shock absorbers, and an air intake moved to the top of the engine bay.
The route to Britain wound through South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, before the pair crossed the Mediterranean for the final run up through Italy and France to London’s Hyde Park.
Fiat has given Young a Fiat Trekking in return for his Panda, which he will use on promotion tours.
