This is Nissan’s first
electric car, the Tama EV, built in 1947 and recently restored to run on direct current with a resistor as accelerator. |
Convener Fred Rascher said this will the 37th edition of the annual
event in Alexandra Park and as always, all car nuts are welcome to join — either
as an individual or with a club.
Rascher said the focus has long shifted from showing veteran cars
to also showcase the craftsmanship that goes into hot-rods, custom and muscle
cars and even bakkies.
But because events like this is all about nostalgia, this year
would the club would like to showcase as many ‘orphan cars’ as possible.
Rascher explained that “orphan cars” are marques that are no longer
made. “A long list indeed, with recent losses that include Pontiac and Mercury.
We want to welcome back the many lost cars of childhood, whenever you had your
childhood. Please bring along any of these cars which include Austin, Morris,
Riley, Wolseley, Arrol-Johnston, Lanchester, Nash, Hudson, Plymouth, Sunbeam,
Railton, Desoto, Studebaker and SAAB.
“We would be keen to see an Edsel or a Trojan. Our tastes, and
those of the visitors, are wide and welcoming. Let’s pay tribute to interesting
cars of the past.”
The Just Cruising club told Weekend Witness they
will do just that.“We will have more than 30 veteran and vintage cars at our
stand, with live music and people who really have fun with their wheels. It will
be dilating,”said Justin Kistensamy.
To register for the 2013 Cars in the Park, displayers have to
inform Rascher during April how many vehicles they intend to display and if
applicable, in which colour-coded area the cars were parked in 2012.
“I will send the stickers. This will make entry and parking easier
for all. I trust that you will all honour the spirit of the day and only
distribute them to eligible vehicles.
“When settled in your display spot, trot down to the registration
tent, sign a form and then collect a display card, and a memento for the day.
“With your support we look forward to a happy and interesting car
show,” Rascher stated. Email Rascher on citp@satweb.co.za or call him at
