SUPERBIKE racing may return to Durban on the second-last weekend of
August 23 and 24, if the plans by organisers GAS Sports work out in the SuperGP
Champions Trophy 2014.
Witness
Wheels has learnt that negotiations were underway to stage the superbike
racing at two possible venues in Durban, neither of which is a street venue.
This new-look national motorcycle circuit racing championship will
see eight rounds for the headline SuperGP and Super600 categories and seven
rounds for the other categories, starting at the Phakisa Freeway in Welkom over
March 15 to 16.
The KZN leg of the race is still subject to confirmation on the
draft calendar, with the new Redstar in Mpumalanga the reserve circuit if plans
do not work out.
The eighth and final round at Phakisa Freeway is also the planned
South African round of the FIM Superbike World Championship, with SuperGP and
Super600 the only national supporting categories.
GAS Sports will promote and manage the race meeting format similar
to the FIM Superbike World Championship, with practice and qualifying on
Saturday and racing on Sunday.
Fans of really fast motorbikes can join the SuperGP Facebook page
Super-GP Champions Trophy, follow the tweets on @SA Super GP or log on to
