Five ways to save fuel for free

Drive less:

Plan your trips to make fewer journeys. At current prices, a 1 600 cc engine is costing you at least R1,20 for each kilometre travelled in town, even if you have a light right foot.

Maintain momentum:

Bad drivers brake, good drivers go slower to catch the green.
This of course requires focusing on the road ahead, instead of texting or fiddling with the radio.

Don’t idle:

Avoid congested roads by travelling outside peak hours. Switch off if you know you will be standing still for more than 40 seconds.

Keep the revs lower:

Get in the highest gear as soon as possible and then keep the rev counter as low as possible.

Ride a scooter:

Only soccer moms really need cars with seats and then only in the West. Dads can pay for a new scooter with the fuel they save.
