Piet Matipa for Beeld reported how a motorist, who had been knocked unconscious by kudu that came crashing through his windscreen, ended up tenderly holding a dead animal at Hartbeespoort near
Pretoria last week.
Steve Anderson snapped the uniquely South African photo of Gery
Craye (67) in his Ford Fiesta before pulling Craye from the wrecked hatchback.
“I am grateful to be alive,” Craye said. He sustained a broken nose
and cheek and had to get stitches to close cuts in his face, “but he is
alive”.
Anderson said he saw the entire kudu crash as if in slow motion. He
was on his way to work in the direction of Lanseria Airport and said it was
drizzling.
“I saw two kudus standing behind a bush near a bridge [over the
Crocodile River].
He said the first kudu tore open the roof of the car and landed on
the driver’s lap, knocking Craye unconscious. Craye then spun against Anderson’s
Range Rover with enough force to tear off his car’s back wheels and shocks.
Anderson, who was unhurt, rushed out to help Craye. “I was worried the kudu
would kick him and hurt him, but the animal was already dead.”
Craye remained unconscious for about five minutes and the first
thing he said when he came to was: “What happened?”
He was sent to the Brits Hospital to be patched up and was
discharged on the same day.
