To put this number in perspective, GWM sold 230 cars all month.
Toyota does not, however, sell South Africa’s best-selling car. That honour
still goes to Volkswagen, whose dealers sold 4,263 Polo Vivos and 2,151 Polos.
Toyota does still sell South Africa's most popular bakkie in the Hilux, having
handed the keys to 3,907 new owners and exported another 5 917 units. The Ford
Ranger is the second most popular bakkie in SA, with 2,629 units sold and 3 836
exported.
In sheer numbers, Nissan’s halftonner NP200 is third on the bakkie
front, having sold 1 595 units.
JMC’s very impressive newcomer, the Vigus, only sold four units,
but these numbers will climb as word of this Ford-based Chinese bakkie spreads.
On the luxury car side, both BMW and Mercedes-Benz are smiling, with
1,066 having bought a shiny 3-series locally, with another 7,167 exported. Merc
sold 1,535 C-Class models locally and exported 5,375. These numbers make the 542
Audi A3 that were sold last month is all the more exclusive -- but not quite as
elite as the two Ferraris that left the show room last month, which is one fewer
than “Godzilla” — or the Nissan GT-4, which sold three units.
Meanwhile, Datsun has sold five units of the affordable Go, which is set to take on the Etios (1,705 units) and the Sandero (786 units). —
