THIS Wheels
supplement is delighted to be the media partner of the inaugural Hesketh
Festival of Wheels over the Easter weekend in April.
The theme for the inaugural festival is Old School Meets New Bling,
and the event is a fund-raiser for the Msunduzi Hospice, which has over the past
two years hosted a car fair on its grounds.
“Our fair has outgrown our premises and the historic Hesketh track
provides the ideal home for us to celebrate the wheels we love,” said Warren
Oxford-Hugget, CEO of Msunduzi Hospice.
He said the “old school” part of the theme will remember the
spectacular drivers and races held at the old dirt track.
More information on
this golden era of sidecar racers and fast Austins, Borgward and Vauxhalls, can
be found on the heritage website hosted by Nigel Owen, a mechanic from
Pietermaritzburg who retired in Spain after running his own engine business in
the UK. When not fettling the Vauxhall Viva GT driven by Ray Emond, Owen raced
stock cars at Roy Hesketh Circuit Dust Bowl up to the seventies.
The “new bling” part of the theme, said Oxford-Hugget, will give
the fans a chance to ride around the track in the latest models, from small
hatches that just sip fuel to powerful saloons that will go sideways with the
slightest encouragement.
“What sets the Hesketh Festival of Wheels apart is that all the
vehicles will be moving, and the fans will be able to buy a ride from R50 a pop,
with a professional driver showing them what the vehicle can do,” he said.
The event, which will run from April 3 to April 6, will open on
Good Friday with many of the latest models on show.
