PASSIONATE cyclist and mechanical engineer Marc le Borgne said he
spent many nights thinking how to overcome the challenges of discomfort on
traditional bikes and the low visibility of recumbent bikes.
The Kervelo bike-trike combo is the Swede’s answer and Le Borgne is
now raising funds for the bike on Kickstarter.
The Kervelo bike is a direct front-wheel drive bicycle with
18-speed gears in the front hub.
The direct drive bicycle removes the chain and provides great
comfort, it is efficient to ride and very simple to maintain, a vehicle that
pioneer bikers would certainly love, he explains.

As with the £1 999 (R43 000) Babel bike in a roll cage, launched
last year by Crispen Sinclair, the semi-recumbent position lifts the cyclist
higher than most car seats and enables more efficient use of leg power.
Le Borgne is selling the Kervelo either as a bicycle or a tilting
trike with a 40-litre insulated bag between the rear wheels. To change between
bike and trike mode, the rear axles simply slides off the central frame.
Le Borgne wants 25 000
Swedish kroner — about R46 929 — for the trike, but he said this project
will go ahead only if people pledge at least R750 000 on Kickstarter.
