The SA Guild of Motoring Journalists has announced this year’s finalists for the Car of the Year (Coty) award.
While the overall Coty title is a sought after crown, just making the list is a great achievement for any car maker.
The list also shows consumers which new models have moved automotive benchmarks higher in terms of technological prowess and value for money, according to the guild’s judges.
Besides the overall winner’s crown, the finalists can win one of nine categories: Budget, Compact, Family Compact, Family, Premium, Performance, New Energy, Adventure SUV and Double Cab.
The Luxury category this year has no contenders in South Africa.
Of interest, however, is that the Auto Trader New Car Awards in England has bestowed its luxury car title on the Mercedes-Benz G Class, based on owners’ answers to questions in 16 categories.
Back in SA, the only contender in the Family category is the Volkswagen Caravelle.
The Compact Family has six finalists:
• the Hyundai Creta,
• Kia Seltos,
• Mazda CX-30,
• Peugeot 2008,
• Toyota Corolla Sedan and
• Volkswagen T-Roc.
The Budget category has three totally different contenders:
• Hyundai Grand i10,
• Suzuki S-Presso, and
• Toyota Starlet.
In the Compact category three crossover SUVs are much closer aligned in shape and size, namely the:
• Hyundai Venue,
• Opel Corsa and
• Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
Next week sees the final round of scoring, which includes sales data and the winners. The overall SA Car of the Year Winner will be announced on June 26.
