FOTON has launched a sub-R200 k version of its luxury-specced
single-cab Tunland, using the same five-speed gearbox and 2,8-litre Cummins
turbo diesel (96 kW, 280 Nm) but less bling than what is on — and in — the
Tunland Off-road.
Without the bull bar, fog lights, anti-pinch electric windows and
rock slider, added to the Tunland Off-road, Foton can sell the Workhorse for
R199 950, but it said this is no stripped-down bakkie. “The Tunland was designed
from the ground up by an international team of development engineers to be tough
and rugged while also offering a spacious cab, comfortable ride and a
comprehensive standard specification,” Foton said in a statement.
While there are currently eight workhorse bakkies with similar
power specs that are from R4 k to R40 k cheaper than the Tunland Workhorse,
Foton will aim it only against the formidable 2,2 m Hawk engine from Mahindra,
which is slightly stronger at 89 kW and 290 Nm and which sells for R190 k in the
Scorpio; and the Toyota Hilux 2,5 D4-D, which has 75 kW, 200 Nm and sells for
R230 k. These two bakkies are currently the farmer’s favourite in SA.
The Tunland’s cabin features aircon, electric windows and
height-adjustable front seat belts, while active safety features include ABS
brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and a driver’s side air
bag. The doors have remote central locking and will locks automatically when the
vehicle moves. It is licensed for a payload of 1 105 kg on a ladder-frame
chassis that has a ground clearance of 160 mm.
Tunland claims a combined consumption of eight litres/100 km.

The Workhorse sells with a three-year/100 000 km warranty,
three-year roadside assistance and a three-year/unlimited anti-corrosion
warranty.
