Zombie car’s Steampunk dad had one wheel

HYBRID builder Jens Denks in Pietermaritzburg lies awake at night thinking of a Zombie car.
His company, Denks Motors, leads KZN if not South Africa in building electric and hybrid drives and Witness Wheels has challenged him to electrify an old MkI Ford Escort for the Kalahari Speed Week in September.

This will not be the first to attempt to go set a speed record somewhere in a desert in a hybrid vehicle. The strangest attempt was a decade ago, in the United States, when part-time programmer and Renaissance Fair jouster Jake Lyall made news with his Steampunk-designed Riot Wheel.
Riot stands for “Re-Invention Of The Wheel”.

While Lyall has since gone quiet, he did for a while grab the imagination of the world with his Riot Mk1. His half-ton monowheeled monster can reach only 45 km/h.
While Lyall built the Riot with zero experience, Denks believes especially half-tonner bakkies can benefit from hybrid conversions and his is the only company in KZN willing to undertake such jobs, as he will prove with the hybrid Escort.
