Zamazulu’s Shangwe in finals

Science teacher Themba Shangwe (left) at Zamazulu high school is very proud of his star pupil Khulekani Madlala, who is one of seven finalists in a national Jaguar Land Rover schools’ challenge to design a car using recycled materials.
A self-described inventor, Khulekani used an old radio to build the full-electric Land Rover model, complete with a surfboard on the roof and a cable toggle to make it crawl forward, and he hopes it will be enough to win the R20 000 first prize so that Zamazulu can buy stools for the school’s science lab and laptops for the pupils to do research on.
School principal Xolani Ndlela said the school has focused on science and maths since its start as a primary school in 2004, and has seen a number of pupils achieve in local and international science competitions as a result.
