Lie on your back to really feel the daisies |
Apart from offering the most romantic picnic in Africa, the
regional food is fantastic.
This week’s reports from travellers say that the Skilpad area especially in the Namakwa National Park is still a carpet of daisies, with good rains having prolonged the natural extravaganza.
Bernard van Lente, manager of the park, said the coastal area, from the Spoeg River to Groen River is worth the drive for people with 4x4 vehicles. He reassured us that the daisies are expected to last a few more weeks yet.
Witness Wheels can advise that touring the daisies is a trip that is unique in this world and one that should be done while on honeymoon. For there is something about billions of flowers all doing their best to pollinate that has even old men feeling like skipping along.
Go through Upington in order to stock up on the very dry sparkling wine at Orange River Cellars. It is just as good as Moet Champagne.
Also, ask at a butchery for sheep rib from the Karasberg area over the border in Namibia. Even Karoo farmers admit this mutton is better than theirs. You may, however, have to dodge flying biltong while asking, for at least one of the butcheries in town have added a motor to a rotary washing line — to dry the biltong hanging from it that much faster.
Also buy some fresh dough and any preserves from the local tuisnywerheid. Remember ice for the Champagne, a folding grid for the ribs and a blanky on which to sit.
The four-hour trip from Upington to Springbok can take as long as you want, but don’t turn off for the Augrabies falls. They’ll still be there on the way back, but the daisies bloom only briefly.
When you have found a place that is full of flowers all the way to the horizon, spread the blanket, start a small fire, (gas is cheating) and prepare to toast your date and roast the ribs. If you spend the night, prepare for billions of bright stars to continue what the flowers started. This is truly tripping the daisy fantastic.
