Racers gathered to support an illegal-to-legal plan |
Over 3 500 people had gathered for a midnight meeting in
Raisethorpe, where Pietermaritzburg racers showed the city council they are
serious about taking their illegal, late-night dices to a legal venue, if the
city can dedicate such an area for them.
Sidewayz club member Michael Chetty
told Witness Wheels the politicians who used the meeting to
canvass votes were all behind the illegal-to-legal initiative not only for any
political support it may garner, but to manage the real dangers posed to the
city’s residents and property by frequent illegal night racers.
‘Our city fathers were also young once and they know we cannot outlaw racing, but we can provide a place where the lads can let off steam safely,’ Chetty said.

The
Sidewayz club members this week sorted through the venues suggested by the
racers and hope to meet with council during the week ahead to maintain the
momentum of the illegal-to-legal initiative.
