They will work like a cross between Segway’s ride-on gyroscopes and some flashy 1970s disco roller skates, these motorised shoes by product designer Peter Treadway strap over your shoes to provide commuting made in petrol-head heaven.
Treadway says his shoes can do 16 km/h and — pending the wearer’s weight — has two to three hours of electric life from lithium-ion batteries. Working with LA-based company JPworks, Treadway says they have spun off more than 30 prototypes over a five-year research period to reach the final spnKIX, which should be on sale by March.
JPworks are already taking deposits on the skates, which will retail for a cool $649 (about R5 300).
