Little bakkie, big performer

NEW vehicle owners in the U.S. last week named Hyundai as the wheels with the least problems, topping three categories.
Had they tested the H100 bakkie that is so popular among small business in South Africa, the Korean brand could easily have recorded a fourth category win.
Built using the same formula that made the Mitsubishi L300 bakkie the enduring legend it is today, the H100 provides a comfortable workplace for drivers — as this scribe can testify.

The 2,6 diesel makes 58 kW at 4 000 rpm, with peak torque of 167 Nm coming in at a low 2 200 rpm to lug a total mass of 1,3 tons with ease, with 1,8 tons on the rear axle.
Hyundai aims the H-100 Bakkie at small business operators who need a versatile and reliable vehicle. To this end, Hyundai’s five-year or 150 000 km warranty and roadside assistance provides entrepreneurs owners with stress-free motoring.
After driving the H100 and speaking to other owners, Wheels can report precise power steering through 195/70 R15 tyres reduces driving effort, enabling 800 km-runs to make deliveries.
The latest model has extra seat and shoulder width for freedom of movement and a console oriented at the driver, including sunglasses and cup holders. The optional tilting steering wheel further personalises the steering position.
The 2,6 H100 competes with the Kia and JMC range of trucks, but Hyundai currently boasts the better price offering. A Kia dropside bakkie sells from R225k, depending on the spec levels.
The 2,8 turbo diesel of JMC obviously offers more power, but this also comes with a higher diesel consumption. The very capable Chinese JMC workhorse also has a warranty that is 30 000 km shorter than that of the H100. — WR.
