Drivers duelling

Hamoo and Rusta from Limpopo
ORGANISERS of the national drifting competition, hosted at the Mkondeni fresh produce market on Saturday and Sunday, have warned motorists using the Market Road off-ramp to expect heavy traffic when fans converge to watch some of SA’s top drivers duelling between the loading docks.
“Response to our early bird ticket discount has been phenomenal,” said Michael Chetty, co-organiser at the Sidewayz club. He said Sidewayz has decided to extend the two-for-R70 special offer until noon on Friday, “because soon petrol will go up again and our fans need a break”.
On Saturday, a gate pass will cost R70 per person, with children under 12 paying R40.
The club said the event enjoys the sanction of MotorSport South Africa and the organisers have the required contingency plans in place for a crowd of thousands of people.
Sixty drivers have confirmed that they will be there, with Lionel Jordaan from Cape Town travelling the furthest, to compete against out-of-town teams such as Hamoo and Rusta from Limpopo, 360 Boyz from Dundee, Team Legends from Gauteng, Team Dog aka Chris from Gauteng, Team Mpumalanga and Team Wenties from Durban.
Pietermaritzburg is strongly represented by Marcel Swartz, Dennis Moodley, Andries Graaf, Bruce Swartley and many more.
To miss the traffic jams and catch all the action at the two-day event, Chetty advised fans to arrive early. The gates open at 3 pm on Saturday and on Sunday at 9 am. — WWR.
